Fergal Kiernan

Founder of Kiernan Engineering Consultants, Fergal is an experienced contract and projects manager with over 35 years of experience in the successful and safe delivery of multidisciplinary projects in the UK and Ireland. Motivated and driven by leading major projects with an unwavering emphasis on teamwork, detail and safety, he ensures the exemplary completion of projects. Fergal is a proud member of the Institute of Engineers (Ireland) and the Association of Project Management.

After completing a Degree in Geo-Surveying and a Degree in Architecture, Fergal started working in underground mining, then motorway and tunnel projects in Ireland. He moved to the UK in 1997 to work on the construction of Runway 2 at Manchester Airport. This coincided with the foundation of Kiernan Engineering Consultants, leading to seven years working with MPB on multiple rail and high-rise RC frames projects including the Hilton Tower in Manchester.

From there, Fergal supported J Murphy & Sons for 10 years on numerous rail projects, before starting a contract with Buckingham Group for the Liverpool Lime Street project. In May 2020 he was approached by Siemens to support with Principal Contractor responsibilities on numerous large rail projects in the North West. This relationship has continued for 10 years in contract management, with a focus on the principal contractor role to ensure the safe delivery of large projects. As a STEM ambassador, Fergal has led multiple STEM events for his clients.

Fergal Kiernan led the £168m Liverpool Lime Street Re-signalling and Platform Re-modelling project that won the 2019 Rail Partnership Awards for “Putting Passengers First” and “Collaboration”. Writing the submissions and winning these Awards was key to Buckingham Group Contracting Ltd winning “Contractor of the Year” Award for 2019. Other award winning submissions include the 2010 ICE Awards for Sandhills Station which won medium station of the year and the 2014 Project Manager of the Year Award.

Fergal was then contracted to Siemens for 2yrs to support them with the Trafford Park and Macclesfield Re-signalling projects. He then moved to Balfour Beatty Rail / CRSA to support them with the Crewe Programme works, where Kiernan Engineering provided the majority of the Principal Contractor team for Balfour Beatty. Fergal was then contracted to Amco Giffen for 6 months in Barnsley, before starting the current contract with AMEY on the £6 billion Trans-Pennine Route Upgrade (TRU West) project between Manchester and Leeds.

Abigail Kiernan

Abigail is a chartered civil engineer with over 25 years’ experience managing and coordinating complex projects up to £560 million, in a variety of roles such as principal contractor, contractor or designer team. Clients include Liverpool John Lennon Airport, AMEC-Carillion Manchester Airport and Network Rail. As a STEM/ ICE Ambassador for over 20 years, she guides and inspires young engineers.

After gaining Meng (Hons) in Civil Engineering with the Integrated European Programme, she has established a formidable track record in leading programmes of works, retaining commercial accountability, and delivering in accordance with the required client standards. Abigail’s achievements can be accredited to her logical approach to design and implementation with a particular strength in appointing and galvanising multidisciplinary project teams.

Her recent experience ranges across engineering management of technical documentation produced from tender to live contracts up to £1bn including Contractor’s Engineering Manager for several schemes including Hyde Central Station Platform and station refurbishment in a live station, with works completed two weeks ahead of schedule. Recent work also includes bid management, site monitoring and forensic assessments for scheme continuous improvements.

A firm advocate of CPD, Abigail steps regularly beyond her work to share her experience and skills, reaching schoolchildren, students and professional peers, through mentoring, speaking at industry conferences and Olympic Park in 2012, and leading on procedural change initiatives
